On your question - Killing Death did not set the Darkness free. Dean killed Death because Death wanted him to kill Sam and he was going to do it if Dean didn't.
What set the Darkness free was the spell that Sam was working on with Rowena, which took effect right at the moment that Death "died." So, as Dean said, Sam had the spell and Dean had the Mark to begin with so they were both responsible.
